“What does your acne look like?”
Acne, also known as Acne Vulgaris, can present on many parts of the body including face, neck, chest, back, and limbs.
If you don’t REALLY know what Acne is, my blog about what Acne is will help you truly understand what is happening.
So what does your acne look like?
Acne type: Whiteheads
Closed Comedones are spots/ acne lesions that sit just below the skin surface. They are not exposed to air.

Acne Type: Blackheads

Blackheads are open comedones whereby the spot/ acne lesion is on the surface of the skin and becomes dark. Unlike the commonly believed myth, this pigmentation does not occur due to attracted dirt; it is actually as a result of exposed sebum that becomes oxidised with air.
Acne Type: Papules
These can appear as small pink-ish bumps that can be tender or sore.

Acne Type: Pustules

The lesions often appear red and inflamed at the base with pus present or oozing at the peak. The lesions can also be painful and uncomfortable.
Acne Type: Nodules
These lesions can become large, solid painful bumps deep in the skin.

Acne Type: Cyst

These lesions present as deep, pus-filled and painful lumps.
As you can see the presentations of these lesions can vary significantly and even look different on different areas of the body and on skin of colour.
The more superficial lesions of acne like whiteheads, blackheads, papules and pustules can be addressed using conservative treatment options like simple amendments to skincare, homecare, diet (and supplements) and non-surgical aesthetic medical treatments like Chemical Exfoliation and Collagen Induction Therapy.
The deeper lesions such as nodules & cysts may require the conservative options alongside antibiotic therapy and possible drainage of the lesion.
“Acne in Skin of Colour needs to be addressed now!"
Acne in Asian clients is often seen to be worse especially if there is a delay in treatment.
This is because skin of colour presents deeper & more visible scars and hyperpigmentation than those of Caucasian skin types and the longer the lesion is present, the deeper the side effects which makes them harder to treat.
Dr Natasha Verma can help provide you with all the simple tools you need to treat and manage your acne easily, along with the support you need along your skin journey to skin confidence!
As always,
Prioritise yourselves!
