Hi all,
I hope you are all well!
To make matters even more confusing, what if you have a mixture of oily AND dry skin?! What if you have combination skin?!
Our skin types are essential for knowing what products and treatments will suit our skin well. Knowing this, will also help us stay clear of products and treatments that can exacerbate the oily-ness and dryness!
There are 4 general skin types:
1) Normal
2) Combination
3) Dry
4) Oily

Combination skin is simply having oily or shiny skin in some areas of your face and dry skin in other areas. I'm sure you've all heard of an oily T-zone; oily skin on your forehead, nose and chin. This means you can have different skin textures on your face. It can be caused by genetics, hormones or the environment where you have more active sebaceous glands in the oilier aspects of your face.
So what can you do to manage your Combination skin?
This can be the most confusing skin type as you need to find the right balance of products specifically for your skin otherwise you could end up causing more breakouts or more dryness.
- Cleanse twice daily using lukewarm water, a gentle exfoliating cleanser, and a soft towel to pat dry your skin. Avoid hot water as this can dry out the skin.
- Consider using a salicylic acid toner on the oilier aspects of your face to break down the oil and reduce pore size.
- Use a light, oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser regularly
- Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day on top of your moisturiser.
- Consider using a retinol night cream but choose carefully as an intense formulation may dry out the skin more.
- Use a clay mask on the oily areas of your face but do not apply this to any dry areas. Instead consider a soothing and hydrating mask such as Aloe Vera or hyaluronic acid every 14 days to allow for hydration to be delivered in to the skin. Plan the use of this when you go to bed to allow for maximum time in contact with your skin.
- With regards to treatments, Chemical Exfoliation treatments can be tailored to treat both, oily and dry areas of skin in one sitting. Read all about how chemical exfoliation treatments work in my blog.
