Smiles are infectious, but how we feel about our smile, can ultimately impact how we feel about ourselves. If you have a smile that shows more gum than you would like, you may find yourself wondering how to get rid of a gummy smile using dermal fillers.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers need no introduction. They are one of the most effective and sought-after treatments on the market today. They are incredibly versatile and can be used to address several concerns including aging, volume loss, and minor imperfections including nasal shape, and gummy smiles.

Most Dermal fillers are based on a substance known as Hyaluronic Acid, which occurs naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid is known as a natural humectant, it can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water and support overall skin health by helping it to retain water, and moisture for a more plump, youthful appearance.

How to get rid of a gummy smile using lip fillers

If you are looking at how to get rid of a gummy smile using lip fillers, then our experts here at Skin NV can help.

The first step is to assess and review your overall concerns. From there we will recommend a suitable treatment plan that will benefit you, giving you the results, you desire.

In treating gummy smiles, we can strategically inject the dermal filler into the upper lip to increase thickness and balance out your overall lip shape. This will add definition and volume to the lip to reduce gum exposure, whilst retaining your natural beauty.

What to expect from Dermal Fillers

Lip fillers are classed as a non-invasive treatment and take around 40 minutes to complete. Now, dermal fillers are not considered to be painful, but you may experience a slight sting or discomfort from the needles, so we use a topical numbing agent to help you feel more comfortable during treatment.

Following your treatment, you may notice slight swelling, bruising, and tenderness, around the lips, but this is natural and will heal within a few days.

In general, lip fillers last between 6 – 12 months. After that, you may require another treatment to maintain your results. To ensure longevity, there are some aftercare guidelines that we recommend you follow, these will be discussed with you in more detail during your consultation.

Aftercare includes:

• Avoid direct sunlight

• Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours

• Avoid strenuous exercise

• Drink plenty of water

• Avoid excessive heat such as saunas, hot showers, and stoves

Can Lip Fillers be Removed?

Yes. If for whatever reason you are dissatisfied with your result, lip fillers can be reversed. To reverse them, we can use a specific saline solution to dissolve the filler and restore your natural look. However, having lip filler dissolved isn’t always advised, unless entirely necessary as this can also dissolve some of your natural collagen.
