Let’s start with the South-Asian diet……….High sugar and juicy Jalebis and Fatty Fried pakore! These are the obvious dishes that are well- known not to be great for general health including skin & hair health.
Generally, the daily vegetarian Indian sabjis or sabzees (whichever you prefer) are quite healthy plant-based dishes, however, butter chicken doesn’t quite make the cut!
So aside from these obvious points, how may our roti-loving diet affect our skin and hair?
Studies has shown that South Asians are 10% more sensitive to wheat, corn and tomato compared to Caucasians…… so that’s your roti, your makki ki roti and pretty much EVERY sabji you’ve ever eaten!
However, this study showed that as we have a high number of antibodies associated with food intolerances, less than 1.2% of individuals will show signs of a rash or irritation.
Moving on to some more shocking news…… 90% of South Asians are thought to be lactose intolerant. This means that it is possible that 90% of us are unable to breakdown the sugars within dairy products. Why?
From the age of 5 years, the production of Lactase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down the milk sugar Lactose, is reduced therefore the Lactose is not broken down and remains in our intestines, drawing in water from the other cells and encouraging the production of in-pleasant by-products. Scary right?!
So if these food intolerances to dairy, wheat and tomatoes aren’t presenting as rashes and irritation, then what’s the problem?
Let’s go back to one of my regular quotes:
“Your skin and hair communicate how your body is feeling”.
Acne, dullness, dryness, hair loss and pigmentation are clinical signs that something within your body is unbalanced. Something within your body is unhappy.
So how can we expect long-term solutions with an over-the-counter skincare from Boots or Superdrug?!
Did you know about these intolerances and statistics? Would you like me to collaborate with a nutritional specialist to provide solutions for such intolerances?
Let me know in the comments!
