“I have lots of questions about Anti Wrinkle Treatment but I don't know where to start!”
This is the statement from one of my clients and she is the reason that I am writing this blog post!
The anti-ageing treatment has BOOMED in the past decade and more and more individuals are considering it.
But as always there’s so much contradicting information out there even with the simplest questions.
So here I am to help!
The 10 most common questions I am asked about anti-wrinkle injectables!
1. Will I look unnatural or frozen after anti wrinkle injectables?
No, not if the treatment is implemented properly!
The secret is small, conservative dosages targeting the correct muscles. If high dosages or concentrations of toxin are administered, this can lead to muscle paralysis such that the muscle cannot contract or move at all. This often leads to an unnatural, frozen and shiny appearance.
Over-treatment and paralysis of one muscle can also cause over-exertion on the surrounding untreated muscles such that further lines develop while the facial muscles try to restore the harmony of natural facial expression and function.
At Skin NV, I use anti-wrinkle injectables as a ‘tweakment’ to deliver predictable, subtle results, so you still look like you, only with less noticeable facial lines.
2. Do anti-wrinkle treatments hurt?
Ultimately, the injectable is administered using a needle which can be uncomfortable. However, a topical anaesthetic can be used to numb the treatment area such that only a momentous, mild pressure is noted.
Following post-treatment instructions will also help reduce any redness, swelling, discomfort and risk of infections and side effects.
3. If I don’t continue the anti wrinkle injectables, will I age faster?
No. You are ageing daily as it is and when the treatment wears off after 3-6 months, your skin will return to how it was pre-treatment and will continue to age as normal, as if you never received treatment.
4. How long does the treatment last?
Anti-wrinkle treatments take up to 14 days to reach full efficacy and can last between 3-6 months, depending on the area treated. The breakdown of the toxin is accelerated if your metabolism is fast or if you use the treated muscles too frequently.
5. How do I know how many injections I need?
That depends on the area you are receiving treatment for, how active your muscles or glands are and how frequent your treatments are.
Your Aesthetic Doctor will assess your muscle/gland activity at the appointment and administer the appropriate dosage at the sites of muscle activity and line formation. I usually arrange a review approximately 2 weeks later to assess the result.
6. Who should not have anti-wrinkle treatments?
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women as the effects on the foetus and baby is not clear.
- Individuals with Neuro-muscular disorders or active skin disease or infection.
- All other medical conditions will be discussed at the consultation appointment to determine if the procedure is safe.
7. Can I catch a flight after anti wrinkle Injectables?
You can fly 24 hours after treatment, however, it is best to consider the treatment 2-3 weeks prior to travelling or any big events to ensure the outcome is suitable.
8. Are anti-wrinkle injectables vegan?
Yes, it does not contain any animal products. The developers of the injectable have also confirmed that there is no evidence of eggs used within their product. However, to be deemed a medical product, the UK government still requires this product to be tested on animals so is currently tested on animals. Allergan is making progressive efforts to reduce this.
9. What is the difference between dermal fillers and Anti wrinkle Injectables?
This is actually a common question. They are actually completely different agents used in completely different scenarios.
The toxin reduces muscle and gland activity. This will help with mild-moderate lines and wrinkles like crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines (to name a few). The injectable toxin can also be used for decreasing sweat and oil gland activity reducing oily and sweaty skin.
Dermal fillers cannot be used to manage wrinkles caused by muscle activity and will have no impact on any of the glands. Instead, they enhance, volumise, lift and support the tissues while defining jaw lines, increasing fullness and improving the shapes of lips and balancing the profile by adding volume to your chin. These are just a few examples of possible Hyaluronic acid dermal filler treatments.
Your Aesthetic Doctor will assess your skin concerns at your consultation appointment and will advise you of the most suitable aesthetic treatment solution for you and your concerns.
10. I’ve just had my Covid Vaccine, can I still have anti-wrinkle treatment?
Dermal fillers containing Hyaluronic Acid presented more obvious clinical reactions compared to those who had anti-wrinkle treatments.
Despite this, it has been advised to avoid anti-wrinkle injectables for two weeks before and after your Covid-19 vaccination or booster.

Choosing the right medical professional is the MOST important decision you need to make, regardless of which treatment solution you opt for.
I really hope this is useful however, I would always strongly recommend a consultation with a medical practitioner for bespoke advice for your skin concerns and Botulinum Toxin treatments.
As always,
Prioritise yourselves!
