There are 3 types of hair – Ethnic/Asian, Western/Caucasian and Afro-Caribbean.
This is the structural basic difference between them:

But did you know……..
Your Asian hair grows faster than Caucasian hair and despite what you think, your Asian hair is actually less dense and suffers more dryness than Caucasian hair.
So why does your hair look thicker than Caucasian hair?
- The colour i.e. the amount of melanin in your hair makes the hair appear thicker and denser.
- The cross-sectional diameter of each hair fibre is larger, again, making the hair appear fuller.
So why is hair loss so obvious in Asian men & women?
The appearance of thickness and high density of hair makes it more obvious when there is less density of hair or exposure of scalp skin.
What are the most common causes of hair loss in Asians?
- A medical condition – thyroid issues and hormone imbalances are most commonly known.
- Traumatic habits – vigorously towel-drying your hair or massaging the oil into your scalp and regular hair dyeing and styling treatments.
- Vitamin deficiencies- Vitamin D is a common deficiency in Asians due to high melanin content in the skin. More about this in another blog!
- Hairstyling habits – tight hairstyles can result in receding hair lines or the same hairstyle can lead to thinning at the parting.
Can you determine which lifestyle and hairstyle habits may be exacerbating your hair loss?
As always,
Prioritise yourselves!
