Everyone's skin is individual, but your heritage and genetics do influence how your skin behaves. One of the questions we're asked most is why Asian skin seems to react differently. Here are the key things to know, and what they mean for your routine.
Melanin: protective, but reactive
Asian skin covers a huge range of tones, but many people of South Asian, East Asian and Middle Eastern heritage have more active melanin. That gives good protection against burning. The flip side is that the skin is quick to produce extra pigment after any inflammation, from a spot, a bite, a rash or a product that's too harsh. This is why hyperpigmentation, melasma and post-acne marks are among the most common concerns we see.
Ageing often shows differently
Many people with Asian and melanin-rich skin notice deep lines later than friends with paler skin. Melanin's protection from UV plays a part. Instead, early ageing often shows as uneven tone, dark spots and changes around the eyes. Daily sun protection is still one of the best things you can do to keep skin looking healthy.
Oily, acne-prone skin
Many people find their skin produces more oil, especially in warm weather, which can make breakouts more likely. The challenge is clearing oil without stripping the skin, because irritation leads to marks.
- Cleanse gently, morning and night; a second cleanse in the evening helps if you wear sunscreen or make-up
- Use pore-clearing ingredients such as salicylic acid, introduced gradually
- Keep a light moisturiser in the routine, even for oily skin
Sensitive and easily marked
Asian skin can be prone to sensitivity, and to scars or marks that darken. Be wary of strong scrubs, DIY peels and trending actives used at full strength. Introduce one new product at a time, and stop if your skin stings or stays red.
What helps most
- A short, consistent routine rather than lots of products
- Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen that suits your skin tone
- Antioxidants such as vitamin C, and tone-evening ingredients
- Professional advice before strong peels or lasers
