“Did you know Wrinkles appear later in Asians?”

So why do Asians wrinkle later in life compared to Caucasians? No no! I’m not complaining! I’m sure you aren’t either! Remember, a few blogs ago I mentioned that Asian skin has a different composition to Caucasian skin? Well……We literally have thicker skin!

The skin is made up of MANY layers and cells……. It is not just one layer wrapping up our bodies as many assume!

The 3 main layers are The Epidermis (most superficial layer), The Dermis and The Subcutaneous Layer.

Today, I’d like to talk about The Dermis.

So the middle layer aka The Dermis consists of many structures including the hair follicles (where hair grows from), the sebaceous glands (which if overactive may be responsible for your acne) and many other cells. Hyaluronic acid is also present in the dermis and this is a molecule that is responsible for hydration, water retention and structural support of your skin.

Ageing of the skin can happen intrinsically where these is a loss or reduction of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). This is when the skin appears dry, thin, fragile rather than plump, radiant and youthful. The lack of plumpness or support results in wrinkles and fine lines. Yes, wrinkles are folds caused by saggy or unsupported skin!

So why do Asians wrinkle later in life compared to Caucasians?

No no! I’m not complaining! I’m sure you aren’t either!

Remember, a few blogs ago I mentioned that Asian skin has a different composition to Caucasian skin? Well……We literally have thicker skin!

We have a thicker dermis layer which means we have more Hyaluronic acid molecules, more water retentive properties and more support. Therefore the intrinsic ageing caused by loss of moisture takes longer so wrinkle formation takes longer.

However, as soon as ageing starts, it becomes significant very quickly! Why? Because all our bad habits…….sitting in the sun without shade or sunscreen, bad diets, lack of a skincare routine…..they all start to show on our skin.

So how can you protect the skin moisture to delay ageing or prevent significant progression?

1) Drink lots of water

2) Add Hyaluronic acid into your skincare regime (choose a product that you know is being absorbed)

3) Consider skin booster treatments to encourage production of Hyaluronic acid

4) Most importantly, wear sunscreen DAILY!

Remember the longer you delay your skin self-care, the longer it will take to rectify!

Which Hyaluronic Acid products or treatments have you considered?
