Pigmentation Treatment

Pigmentation on the skin can be frustrating, and because it can come as a result of a number of different factors, it can be hard to pinpoint its exact cause.

Before considering any specific pigmentation treatment, it is important to understand exactly what pigmentation on the skin is and what causes it. From there, we will help you determine a bespoke treatment that will work for you, and help you achieve your skin goals.

What is pigmentation?

The term pigmentation simply refers to the colouring of the skin, and the factors that cause changes of colour in the skin. In the human body, a substance called Melanin is made by the cells to control your hair, eye, and skin pigmentation. The more melanin you produce, the darker these features are likely to be. Melanin is also used to help protect the skin from the UV rays of the sun.

Problems in pigmentation problems are usually linked to poor melanin functioning, which can lead to dark spots appearing on the skin (known as hyperpigmentation).

What causes Pigmentation

There are a number of factors that could lead to pigmentation within the skin. In addressing pigmentation treatments, it is important to understand that some treatments can exacerbate the situation if used incorrectly, so it is crucial you seek a trained aesthetic doctor.

A trained professional will help to determine the root cause of your pigmentation, and provide an effective pigmentation treatment solution to combat, and control the situation.

Some of the causes of pigmentation include:

– Hormonal changes

– Acne scarring

– Sun damage

– Pregnancy

– Medication (including Chemotherapy)

Pigmentation Treatment

Here at Skin NV, we have a range of treatment solutions available to help address pigmentation in the skin and prevent it from returning in the future. The first step is to assess and address your pigmentation to determine the cause. From there, we can provide you with an effective solution, or combination of treatments to control it.

Treatment options include:

Chemical Peels

The most superficial layer of your skin often contains damaged cells, and a number of pigment cells if you suffer from areas of discolouration or hyperpigmentation.

Chemical exfoliation, or Chemical peels, can be used to help the natural exfoliation process, and remove these cells from the skin to expose new, healthy cells.

Our experts will use a combination of specific medically, and clinically proven agents to help target these skin cells and dissolve the bonds that hold them together.

This treatment is effective in treating hyperpigmentation or discolouration anywhere on the body, including the face, elbows, knees, and underarms.

Skincare

Pigmentation can return at any time, that is why topical skincare is often one of the best ways to address it long-term. Here at Skin NV, we will provide you with a specific skincare routine you can incorporate at home to help to address and prevent the appearance of pigmentation on the skin.

Note, that some ingredients within skincare products can make pigmentation worse if used incorrectly, so make sure you are following the advice of your clinician.

With skincare, we can not only help address current pigmentation problems but also prevent it from returning in the future.

Your at-home skincare regime may also include the use of a Cyspera pigment corrector in the form of a mask. This treatment contains cysteamine which when activated can help lighten pigmentation.

If you are suffering from pigmentation, be mindful of the factors that cause it, including sun damage. To help prevent it from developing, it is important that you are wearing a broad-spectrum SPF to protect your skin against the harmful rays of the sun.

We also offer a number of specialist pigmentation treatments in-clinic that your aesthetic doctor may recommend, including dermamelan, and cosmelan to help you achieve your goals.
