Hi All,

I hope you are all keeping well and safe!

Today I would like to talk to you about how sunlight can affect your skin during this lockdown. Ultra-violet A rays come from the sun and reach your skin whether you are outdoors or sitting inside gazing out!

How? Your double-glazed windows allow most of the UVA rays to penetrate your windows and is responsible for wrinkles, discolouration and skin ageing! You can actually look older sitting indoors! The sunlight indirectly causes skin cell damage so we need to protect our skin.

We can do this by working from the inside out! My next blog will detail what to include in your diet to boost your skin health and immunity at the same time!

However, for now, we can use sunscreen! Sunscreens present a practical approach to daily protection of the skin. Those of you that claimed that you didn’t have time to moisturise after bathing (I was one of them!), well, now you do! You have nowhere to be! So this time should be spent on self-care for you and your family!

So get out those sunscreen moisturisers and make up a song with your kids, so it becomes a fun activity to moisturise daily!

Which moisturisers should you be using?

In short, SPF30-50 Broad spectrum!

Some products are being advertised with a higher SPF than 50. However, there are no studies to prove that there is any added benefit above SPF 50. I would advise gel-based sunscreens for those with oily skin as they are water-based. Sticks are suitable for lips, around the eyes and the nose, and sprays can be convenient for the scalp.

I am often asked about make-up that contains SPF, and my answer is always if it contains SPF 30-50, then there is no issue; however, most make-up products only contain SPF 15. Therefore, you need to apply SPF 30-50 first, then your makeup.

Alternatively, (this is what I prefer) consider a tinted sunscreen of SPF 30-50. Many brands have several shades, but ultimately it is trial and error. I have used and loved Eucerin, and Heliocare tinted sunscreen but it is an individual choice! Which ones have you used and loved?

Please always remember that if you experience any itchiness, redness, stinging or spots, wash your skin and contact me for further advice.

So, what are you waiting for?
